Mental health and some signs of a Mental health Challenge

Mental health includes our mental, emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress ,anxiety, depression and other negative feelings. When someone has a mental health challenge or gets a mental illness, s/he cannot keep his/her composure and is vulnerable to harm.

Some signs someone is struggling with their mental health are:

Sadness or irritability
Feelings of (extreme) highs and lows – mood swings
(Excessive) fears, worries and anxieties
Social withdrawal
Significant (Dramatic) changes in eating or sleeping habits
Unreasonable (Strong) feelings of anger

During this COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges are increasing in because the quarantine makes it difficult for people to distract themselves from existing psychosocial issues. The lockdown and strict measures enforced also trigger feelings of loneliness, and this has switched peoples’ mindset from living to surviving.

How can you help someone with a mental health challenge? The way to do this is delicate because the person struggling with the mental health challenge is usually vulnerable and defensive. Reach out gently and ask nicely if they are okay based on what you noticed. Tell them you are there to listen if they want to talk. The best way to help or support someone especially a loved one struggling with a mental health challenge or a mental illness is to be there for them. By simply providing a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, and unconditional act of kindness, you reassure them that you care about them and that you are there to support them.

Eventually you can learn more about mental health conditions, read up about the different treatments or find a therapist.

Do you or anyone you know struggle with a mental health challenge or a mental illness? Please do not hesitate to reach out and let us hep you the best we can.

Mental Health Awareness Month : What to know

With the increasing challenges surrounding mental health in our society, there is a dire need to talk about Mental Health because many more than we can imagine are affected by mental health challenges and mental illnesses.

Every day is a day to reflect on your mental wellbeing but most particularly, this month of May is reserved and observed as “Mental Health Awareness Month” or “Mental Health Month”. The goal is to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with mental illnesses and their families.

Why does knowledge and awareness about mental health matter?

Major physical health problems, like cancer, cardiovascular disease, alcohol abuse and alcoholism are typically known and the public have the knowledge on what to do for prevention or early intervention. But the same can’t be said for mental health problems. Everyone should have some knowledge and skills to take action to improve their mental health and community mental health as a whole.

Talking about mental health shouldn’t be scary or be labeled a taboo especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, because we all have minds and need to take care of those minds so that they don’t fall sick.

Let us fight the stigma which is against Mental Health awareness, help those who have mental illnesses or may likely develop them, and also help ourselves.

Did you know that:
-the color for Mental Health Awareness Month is lime green?
-the Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949?

What about you?
What do you intend doing or is already doing to raise mental health awareness in your homes, at schools, work places, through the media, local events, and screenings?

Covid-19 Pandemic and a surge in Domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse has recently increased at an alarming rate since the start of this lockdown. Couples who are now forced to stay at home get involved in more quarrels and fights and these may lead to more domestic abuse than happened previously. While we don’t have statistics for Cameroon, a recent article by the Scottish Sun shows an increase of domestic abuse casea by 49 per cent.

Our founder goes nude to raise awareness to a form of blackmail and in solidarity with victims

Resorting to blackmail using nude pictures and videos of individuals is not only morally wrong but also a human rights violation involving emotional, sexual and financial abuse.

Exposing one’s nudity to the public goes against public decorum and may greatly affect the person concerned in several way. For these reasons, it’s particularly vital to fight against this malpractice, break the silence and make it known that it is a crime and an abuse to human rights and must be prohibited.

Both men and women can be victims of this crime, either by being blackmailed or by being coerced into carrying out sexual acts.The best way to stop yourself from becoming a victim is to be very careful about who you befriend online or physically, especially if you’re considering sharing anything intimate with them.

Together, let us fight against private indecency and blackmail.

Mental health matters during this Covid-19 outbreak pandemic

Our Founder on April 21st will be attending a Webinar Series on mental health and Covid-19 organized by Lancet Psychiatry, Mental Health Innovation Network, MHPSS.net and United for Global Mental Health. Covid-19 has been around for about 4 months and has brought a lot of panic and frustration to many people. It has also emitted negative influences which affect both the physical health and the mental health of everyone be they infected or affected by the outbreak. Taking good care of our mental health and supporting those who have or may likely develop mental health problems during this period will help everyone as a whole. During this crisis situation, 5 category of people are a main concern during this Covid-19 outbreak pandemic, especially as far as their mental health is concerned:
1) People who hustle to gain money for their needs and those of their families;
2) The young people, who are more likely to develop mental health problems;
3) The old people, who need support and care since they can get serious mental health problems;
4) People who are affected by Covid-19, the sick and the caregivers; and
5) People already living with a mental illness.
These people are in need of consistent help and support. Raising awareness about mental health matters, sensitizing the community and emphasizing on the importance of taking good care of our mental health will go a long way in the global efforts to curb the effects of the pandemic on the world.

Let’s talk about mental health

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=322561695010791&id=538649879867825&extid=J5Dof2QG1aWjLu3C&funlid=K2ercHi9XGHrsveo&d=w&vh=e

We need to openly confront mental illness like this to heal and help many others on their own journey too. We are all dealing with something which can lead to a mental illness or mental health challenge, and being what the world calls a success or celebrity, doesn’t take our struggles away – on the contrary it seems the fame and pressure to stay famous makes the challenges grow. Kudos to all those confronting mental illness and sharing their struggles publicly like those on this show.
